What we like

  • +Extremely easy setup — most cameras install in under 30 minutes
  • +Widely available at major NZ retailers
  • +Strong Amazon Alexa integration
  • +Reliable motion alerts with solid app
  • +Good range of cameras for every use case
  • +Professional monitoring available (Ring Alarm)

⚠️ Watch out for

  • Best features locked behind Ring Protect subscription
  • No meaningful local storage on most cameras
  • Cloud-only footage means ongoing cost forever
  • Privacy concerns — Amazon holds your footage
  • Battery cameras can miss first 1–2 seconds of motion

Ring is the dominant brand in the NZ home security camera market — and for good reason. It's widely available, easy to set up, and integrates cleanly into the Amazon Alexa ecosystem. If you already have Echo devices, a Ring camera is a natural extension.

But Ring has a significant caveat that shapes every buying decision: without a Ring Protect subscription, Ring cameras are essentially live-view devices. No recording, no video history, no ability to review footage of incidents.

This review is specific to New Zealand — pricing, availability, and relevant context for NZ homeowners.

Ring product range in NZ

Video Doorbells

Ring Video Doorbell 4 — The flagship doorbell and Ring's most popular product in NZ. Available in battery and hardwired configurations. Key features include 1080p HD video, two-way audio with noise cancellation, colour pre-roll (4 seconds before motion triggers), and package detection. The pre-roll feature is genuinely useful at the front door.

Ring Video Doorbell Wired — A slimmer, lower-cost option for homes with existing doorbell wiring. No battery option. 1080p, two-way audio, motion zones. Good value if you have wiring and don't need pre-roll.

Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 — 1536p HD video, Head-to-Toe Video (taller aspect ratio to see packages at your feet), 3D Motion Detection. Premium option for those who want the best Ring doorbell video quality.

Floodlight Cameras

Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Pro — A 1080p camera with integrated floodlights and a siren. Requires mains power. The floodlights provide excellent night illumination — useful for driveways and garage areas. Always-on (no wake-up delay) because it's wired.

Ring Floodlight Cam Plus — Slightly less capable than Pro. Still a solid all-weather option for garages and driveways.

Stick Up Cams

Ring Stick Up Cam Battery — A versatile outdoor/indoor camera available in battery, plug-in, or solar configurations. Popular for renters and secondary camera positions. 1080p, two-way audio, motion zones.

Ring Stick Up Cam Pro — 1080p, 3D Motion Detection, colour night vision with two infrared LEDs. The plug-in version is useful for locations with a nearby outdoor power point.

Indoor Cameras

Ring Indoor Cam — Entry-level, plug-in indoor camera. 1080p, two-way audio, privacy cover. Basic but functional for monitoring interior spaces.

Ring Protect subscription plans

Ring's subscription model is the most important thing to understand before buying. Here's what you get at each tier:

| Plan | Devices | Monthly (approx NZD) | Video History | Key Features | |------|---------|---------------------|---------------|--------------| | No plan | Any | $0 | None | Live view + alerts only | | Protect Basic | 1 device | ~NZ$5 | 180 days | Recording, event review, sharing | | Protect Plus | Unlimited (1 address) | ~NZ$17 | 180 days | All devices, Warranty Extension | | Protect Pro | Unlimited (1 address) | ~NZ$24 | 180 days | Professional monitoring, Alexa Guard Plus |

Important NZ note: Ring subscription pricing is charged in USD. The NZD amounts above are approximate and will vary with exchange rates. Check Ring's website for current pricing.

For most NZ homeowners with 2–4 Ring cameras, Ring Protect Plus offers the best value — one monthly fee covers all devices at the address.

What Ring does well

Ecosystem integration. If you have Amazon Echo devices, Ring is the strongest choice. You can view your front door on an Echo Show, get announcements ("motion detected at front door") through Echo speakers, and arm/disarm Ring Alarm from any Echo device. The integration is seamless and reliable.

Ease of setup. Ring's app is well-designed and the setup flow is straightforward. Most Ring cameras are installed and operational in under 30 minutes with no technical expertise required.

Build quality. Ring hardware is well-built for the price. Outdoor cameras are rated for NZ weather conditions. The Video Doorbell 4 in particular feels premium.

Motion detection. Ring's motion zones and sensitivity controls are reliable. Package detection (with Ring Protect) works well at front doors.

Availability. Ring is stocked at JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, and Bunnings across NZ. If something goes wrong, you can walk into a store. This matters for NZ buyers who want local purchase and return options.

Ring's honest limitations

Subscription dependency. This is Ring's biggest limitation. A Ring camera without a Protect plan is genuinely not very useful. The subscription cost adds up: NZ$17/month = ~NZ$200/year for a full-property system. Over 3 years, that's NZ$600+ in subscription costs on top of hardware.

No local storage option. Ring stores everything in the cloud. There's no SD card slot, no local NVR option, no way to access footage without Ring's servers. If Ring has an outage, you lose access to your footage. If Ring ever shuts down, your cameras become non-functional.

Privacy considerations. Ring's parent company (Amazon) uses aggregate video data for various purposes. Ring cameras faced scrutiny over data sharing with police in the US — practices that have since been modified but are worth being aware of.

Google Home / HomeKit incompatibility. If you're invested in Google or Apple ecosystems, Ring is a poor fit.

Battery cameras have wake-up delay. Like all battery cameras, Ring's battery-powered models have a 1–3 second wake-up delay. For driveway licence plate capture, this is a real limitation.

Who Ring is right for

Ring makes most sense for NZ homeowners who:

  • Already own Amazon Echo devices
  • Want a simple, polished app experience
  • Are primarily focused on front door / doorbell monitoring
  • Are comfortable paying a monthly subscription for full functionality
  • Want cameras available from a local NZ retailer

Who should look elsewhere

Consider Eufy if subscription costs are a concern. Consider Arlo if you want better video quality without paying for local storage hardware. Consider a PoE/NVR system if you need evidence-grade driveway footage or whole-property coverage without ongoing costs.

💡

NZ installation tip: Most NZ houses built before 2000 have existing doorbell wiring. Check your current doorbell button — if wires run behind it, a Ring Video Doorbell Wired is a simple swap. If not, the Ring Video Doorbell 4 battery version is easy to install without an electrician.

Our verdict

Ring is the right choice if you want the easiest possible setup, a great app, and are comfortable paying ~NZ$5–10/month per location for cloud history. Renters and first-time buyers will find it hard to beat for simplicity.

Best for

  • First-time buyers wanting a simple setup
  • Renters needing removable cameras
  • Amazon/Alexa smart home users
  • 1–3 camera setups
  • Front door + driveway coverage

Not ideal for

  • Privacy-focused buyers who want footage off the cloud
  • Large properties needing 5+ cameras
  • Anyone who refuses a monthly subscription
  • Full-time continuous recording
